Hi,
Welcome to our first newsletter of 2012. I can't believe we are already nearly at the end of the first month of the year. It seems only like yesterday we were running around getting ready for the festive season! So now everything is back to 'normal' how has the year started off for you? Do you have some exciting things to look forward to both professionally and personally? |

I am looking forward to a number of things this year - working on new projects, the
London Olympics (even though I have no tickets!), the Diamond Jubilee and the International Coaching Federation Conference which for the first time will be held outside of the US, in London, and ..... later this year we will be 10 years old!
Don't just follow your dreams for 2012 - chase them.
Best Wishes, Carole

Are you managing a virtual team? |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Managing a team can be challenging at the best of times, but how do you manage a virtual one? Almost everyone works in a team environment.
It has always been understood that the most effective teams are those that are located together. However, we live and work in a global environment and times have changed. |

In fact, in my case they changed a decade ago, when I was faced with managing a virtual team across different continents and time zones. Whilst based in the USA (Philadelphia), I had team members located in Europe, Australia, Florida and North Dakota. You may not be in quite the same position, but even if you have team members dispersed around the UK, you will still encounter many of the same challenges. I found managing a virtual team challenging at times but also very rewarding and hope this article helps you.
Depending on the sector you operate in and the services you provide, virtual teams offer many advantages, i.e., virtual teams often see an increase in productivity because of more personal flexibility, commute times maybe reduced and work is not limited by the traditional 9-5 work day. Extended market opportunity is a major benefit of geographically dispersed teams due to direct access to different market opportunities and enabling organisations to establish their presence with customers worldwide. One of the most important benefits of a virtual team is knowledge transfer. Utilising people with different types of knowledge spread out across the globe can be very beneficial to any organisation. Are you a No. 1 boss? |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| |
They say that one reason for happiness in the workplace is a nice boss. But what does nice really mean? I have had some really good bosses who indeed were nice but more importantly they helped nurture my talents and I trusted them.
They led by example and what they said they did - walking the talk. |

However, this is not always the case and according to a recent survey of 2,000 people, conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), employers who neglect concerns about their workers' trust in them, stress at work or job satisfaction are putting their business at risk.
The survey found that 47% of employees who strongly distrust their senior management are currently looking for a new job with just 8% of workers who strongly trust them are seeking a new job. People who face excessive daily pressure in their job are almost twice as likely to be looking for a new position. Geographically, employees in the south west of England expressed the most trust in senior management. To read more about the study click here ...
